One critical component of wildfire preparedness is creating defensible space with fire-smart landscaping that can slow the fire’s spread and give firefighters a better chance to protect your home. Here are some key steps you can take:

• Keep plants green and well-watered
• Clear dead or dry vegetation within 30 feet of structures
• Choose fire-resistant plants and materials
• Space trees and shrubs to prevent fire from climbing

MUSSEL DOG INSPECTIONS BEGIN AT LAKE SONOMA, LAKE MENDOCINO

Boaters launching at Lake Sonoma or Lake Mendocino should be prepared for an inspection by mussel-sniffing dogs looking for invasive species like Quagga, Zebra and Golden Mussels. Inspections run daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

These thumbnail-sized mussels can cling to boats and gear, spreading quickly and forcing the closure of popular recreation spots. They threaten our water, environment and local economy. There are currently no Quagga, Zebra or Golden mussels in these lakes so let’s keep it that way.
