Freestone Flat Road Bridge Replacement
What’s Happening?
Sonoma County plans to replace the Freestone Flat Road Bridge over Salmon Creek in southwest Sonoma County. The new bridge will be a two-lane, cast-in-place pre-stressed concrete box-girder supported on cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles at the abutments.
It will be built parallel and southeast of the existing bridge. The current bridge will stay open until the new one is complete, then it will be disassembled and removed.
How We Got Here
The existing bridge is a two-span steel-girder truss that no longer meets today’s standards and needs to be replaced to improve safety and reliability.
Why It Matters
- Safer, more reliable travel year-round
- Modern design standards for structure and roadway
- Less disruption during construction by keeping the old bridge open
- Better long-term access for residents, visitors, and emergency services
What’s Next
Because the bridge shifts to a new alignment, crews will build new road approaches on both sides. Intersecting roads—Scott Robin Road and a nearby private driveway—will be adjusted to meet the new approach.
Construction timing depends on environmental review, property acquisition, and available funding.
Timeline (estimated)
- Environmental review & property acquisition: Ongoing
- Construction start: Estimated 2024 (subject to funding/permits; schedule may be updated)
